What is skin cancer?

10 June 2019

Very simply put, skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells. The areas most exposed to the sun are the most prone to develop it. It affects people of all backgrounds, but those with fair skin who burn easily are at higher risk. There are three main types — basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma — each named after the skin cell in which it develops.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

The most common type, developing most often in people with fair skin after years of sun exposure or indoor tanning. It is usually found on the head, neck and arms, though it can form anywhere. With early diagnosis and treatment it is very treatable; left untreated it can invade surrounding tissue, nerves and bone and cause permanent damage.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

The second most common type. It often looks like a red firm bump, a scaly patch, or a sore that heals and re-opens, usually on sun-exposed skin such as the ears, face, neck, arms, chest and back. Caught early it is treatable, with a good prognosis.

Melanoma

The most serious and the deadliest form. It can develop within an existing mole or appear as a new dark spot. Early diagnosis and treatment are decisive — which is why you should check your body head to toe once a month and see your doctor promptly about anything that worries you.
