THE PROMISE
A cancer diagnosis is very difficult to accept. Understanding that treating your skin cancer may result in scars or disfigurement can also be troubling. Dr Karatzias understands your concerns and will guide you through treatment and explain the resulting effect on your health and appearance. Skin cancer, much like any form of cancer, may require surgery to remove the cancerous growth. Dr Karatzias can surgically remove cancerous and other skin lesions using specialised techniques to preserve your health and your appearance. Although no surgery is without scars, Dr Karatzias will make every effort to treat your skin cancer without dramatically changing your appearance.
What happens at the first appointment?
Dr. Karatzias assesses the lesion, talks through your concerns and explains what removing it is likely to involve for both your health and your appearance. A plan is then made for your individual situation. Treatment is not the same for everyone, so the details are tailored to you rather than to a fixed protocol.
Will I be left with a scar?
Some scarring is unavoidable — no surgery is entirely without scars. The aim is to remove the cancer fully while keeping the effect on your appearance as small as possible, using specialised techniques, and Dr. Karatzias makes every effort not to change your appearance dramatically. Where a scar is likely to be visible, this is explained to you beforehand.
What if removing the cancer leaves a defect?
When taking out a lesion leaves an area that will not simply close on its own, reconstruction can restore it — for example with skin grafts or flaps. Whether reconstruction is needed, and which method suits you, is decided as part of your individual plan and discussed before any surgery.
What is recovery usually like?
This depends on the size and location of the lesion and on whether reconstruction is involved, so it is best discussed once your plan is clear. In general, the treated area needs time to heal and you will be given specific aftercare guidance. Dr. Karatzias guides you through the treatment and what to expect at each stage.
When should I seek help after treatment?
Contact the clinic if the wound becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen or starts to discharge, if bleeding does not settle, or if you feel generally unwell — these can be signs that the area needs to be reviewed. You should also raise any new or changing skin lesion promptly, as early assessment matters with skin cancer. If you are worried, it is always better to ask.
