The more common reasons for seeking revision breast surgery are implant deflation, implant exchange (size or type), capsular contracture, implant malposition, double-bubble deformity, or a combination of these issues. When a breast implant is inserted, a scar forms around it as part of the natural healing process, called a capsule. The capsule may sometimes tighten and compress the implant creating a distorted breast shape. The goal of revision surgery is to help restore a more youthful contour and attractive appearance.

One to two hours, depending on the condition to be treated.
Local anesthesia and intravenous sedation may be used, although general anesthesia may be more desirable.

Discoloration and swelling may occur initially, changes in nipple or breast sensation.
The patient should be able to return to work within seven to ten days depending on the type of work. Special care must be taken to be gentle with your breasts for at least one month after surgery.
Risks include adverse reactions to anesthesia, blood accumulation that may need to be drained surgically, and infection.

Will my breasts look natural after revision?
That is the aim. Revision surgery is about restoring a balanced, natural-looking contour rather than producing an obviously operated result — correcting whatever has changed since your first operation so the breasts settle into a softer, more youthful shape. The plan is tailored to your individual case and discussed beforehand.
Will there be a visible scar?
Where possible, revision works through the scars from your previous breast surgery rather than creating new ones, so it usually does not add fresh scarring. Any scars typically fade and soften over many months. The approach for your case is explained at your consultation.
Does it hurt, and what are the bruising and swelling like?
Most people describe tenderness and tightness rather than sharp pain, eased with simple pain relief. Some discoloration and swelling are normal at first and then settle, and you may notice temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation. Being gentle with your breasts for at least the first month helps healing.
How much time off will I need?
Most patients are able to return to work within seven to ten days, depending on how physical the job is. Special care should be taken to be gentle with your breasts for at least one month after surgery, which means avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous exercise during that time.
Can revision be combined with another breast procedure?
Often yes. Depending on what needs correcting, revision can be carried out alongside a procedure such as a breast uplift or a change of implant — and whether that suits your case is assessed at your consultation. The operation usually takes one to two hours and is performed under anaesthesia, with general anaesthesia often being the preferred option.
Will I ever need another revision later?
Implants are not necessarily lifelong, so it is possible that further surgery may be needed at some point in the future — for example if a new issue develops with healing or the implant over time. This is a recognised possibility your surgeon will be honest with you about beforehand. Costs vary with the individual plan and are discussed at the consultation.
