Liposuction
What is Liposuction
A well-known procedure, it removes areas of unwanted fat with a tube and a vacuum device. Liposuction techniques, including tumescent or super-wet, are typically performed after targeted fat cells are infused with a saline solution containing a local anesthetic and adrenalin to decrease blood loss. Benefits of this liposuction technique include increased safety, easier fat removal, as well as diminished post-operative discomfort and reduced post-operative bruising and swelling.
The most common locations for liposuction are the chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and the area above the breast.
What is the procedure
There are several techniques commonly used including the traditional technique, laser technique and the ultrasonic technique (UA). The traditional technique utilises a hollow tube to remove the fat and the laser and ultrasonic techniques utilise laser or ultrasonic energy to dissolve that fat before it is removed. Dr. Karatzias will happily discuss which technique is best for you. Possible side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness or burning sensations, while risks are infection, asymmetry, rippling of the skin, pigmentation changes (hypo/hyper), injury to the skin, fluid retention and/or excessive loss of blood and fluids.
How the patient recovers
The patient usually returns to work after five to fourteen days. More strenuous activity may be resumed after two to four weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising may take one to six months depending upon the amount of fat that is removed and the areas that were treated.
We use the most advanced surgical technology, disposables and techniques when performing treatments and procedures to maximize your results and diminish the length of your recovery period. To reduce risks and maintain as much of the results for as long as possible we recommend that you refrain from smoking for a minimum of six weeks prior to the surgery and for the duration of your recovery period. Please also note that for this particular procedure if you become pregnant or lose a significant amount of weight, you should wait until after your body has reached a stable equilibrium.
