THE PROMISE
A well-known procedure, it removes areas of unwanted fat with a tube and a vacuum device. Liposuction techniques, including tumescent or super-wet, are typically performed after targeted fat cells are infused with a saline solution containing a local anesthetic and adrenalin to decrease blood loss. Benefits of this liposuction technique include increased safety, easier fat removal, as well as diminished post-operative discomfort and reduced post-operative bruising and swelling.
The most common locations for liposuction are the chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and the area above the breast.

There are several techniques commonly used including the traditional technique, laser technique and the ultrasonic technique (UA). The traditional technique utilises a hollow tube to remove the fat and the laser and ultrasonic techniques utilise laser or ultrasonic energy to dissolve that fat before it is removed. Dr. Karatzias will happily discuss which technique is best for you. Possible side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness or burning sensations, while risks are infection, asymmetry, rippling of the skin, pigmentation changes (hypo/hyper), injury to the skin, fluid retention and/or excessive loss of blood and fluids.

The patient usually returns to work after five to fourteen days. More strenuous activity may be resumed after two to four weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising may take one to six months depending upon the amount of fat that is removed and the areas that were treated.

Will the result look natural?
That is the aim. Liposuction is about refining your contours and improving proportion — smoothing away stubborn pockets of fat so the area reads as a more balanced version of your own shape, not an obviously "operated" one. It treats localised fat that resists diet and exercise rather than being a substitute for weight loss.
Where are the scars, and will they be visible?
The fat is removed through very small access points for the fine cannula, so any marks are tiny and usually placed discreetly within the natural folds or creases of the treated area. They typically fade over time. The most common areas treated include the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, neck and chin.
Does it hurt, and what are the bruising and swelling like?
Most people describe soreness, tenderness or a burning sensation rather than sharp pain, and this is managed with simple pain relief. Temporary bruising, swelling and numbness over the treated areas are normal in the early weeks. The fully-settled result emerges gradually as the swelling resolves.
How much time off work and downtime should I plan for?

How long do the results last?

If you plan to become pregnant or lose a substantial amount of weight, it is usually best to wait until your body has reached a stable equilibrium.
Can liposuction be combined with another procedure?
Often, yes. Depending on your goals it may be considered alongside or as an alternative to procedures such as fat grafting, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), VASER 3D Lipo, or non-surgical options like PRP mesotherapy and HIFU lifting.
